DESCRIPTION: We will be rerouting our outgoing email through spam filtering.
WHY?
We have been filtering incoming mail for over two years and have seen a great reduction in spam received. This new change will be to protect ourselves from Bryn Mawr email accounts that have been “hijacked”. Due to phishing (maliciously deceptive emails that request user credentials), several instances of bulk spam being sent from Bryn Mawr have occurred. This has resulting in prominent internet service providers like Microsoft, Yahoo, and Comcast intermittently blocking all email originating from Bryn Mawr College. This has caused considerable impact on our community.
With filtering of outgoing email we will be able to catch such instances of hijacked accounts before they impact the community’s ability to send and receive emails with external organizations and individuals. Email patrons whose accounts have been compromised will receive non-delivery reports in their email, alerting them to the situation. In addition, our email administrators will be alerted, so as to remedy the situation as quickly and efficiently as possible. As always, the best thing we as a community can do is to NEVER send Bryn Mawr passwords via email. The IS department will not request this information and emails doing so are not legitimate.
