Changes to Public Printing
Posted August 22nd, 2009 at 6:44 pm.As of August 2009, new software called GoPrint has been added to our public printing environments requiring that each print job be released. The reason for this change is to raise individual and community awareness about how many pages are printed, in conjunction with the College budget reduction process begun in the 08-09 academic year.
At this time, there remains no charge for printing in public labs.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Does this affect the printer in my office or other academic/administrative location?
A: No. At this time, this system is in use only in IS Public locations. This means Canaday, Carpenter, Collier, Guild, and the GSSW Lab.
Q: How do I use this?
A: Check out the document found at http://techbar.blogs.brynmawr.edu/2009/08/17/printing-in-public-labs-releasing-print-jobs/ for full instructions.
Q: Can I print from a laptop that I’m bringing into a library?
A: Absolutely. Follow these instructions:
- Windows: http://techbar.blogs.brynmawr.edu/2009/07/24/printing-to-public-printers-from-your-personal-computer-windows/
- Mac: http://techbar.blogs.brynmawr.edu/2009/07/23/printing-to-public-printers-from-your-personal-computer-mac/
- This is not currently available for Linux, check back soon!
Q: I installed public printers on my laptop last year, will they work?
A: No. You will need to delete those and install the new printers (as above).
Q: Will this affect me if I am a Faculy/Staff member
A: The software works by controlling the public printers, and does not differentiate by individual, thus everyone who prints to these printers needs to follow the same process (above).
Q: Why is this being put in place?
A: This change is a direct result of the public College budget discussions begun during the 08-09 academic year. The reason for this change is to raise individual and community awareness about how many pages are printed with the intention of reducing costs and encouraging conservation. Other colleges and universities who have instituted this kind of system have shown a significant reduction in printing costs.
Q: Is the College going to start charging for printing?
A: At this time, there is no directive to charge for printing. However, if funds cannot be conserved by awareness, it is possible that models for charging will be considered as they have been at other institutions.
