Problem under investigation: Printing to HP Printers/Opening Word
Posted September 28th, 2009 at 5:44 pm.Some community members have been experiencing computer troubles in the past few days. It may appear as:
- Unable to open Word, or severe delay opening Word
- Unable to print, severely delayed printing, or hanging when trying to print to some models of HP printers (4250, 4350, 4200, 4700, 2015, etc.) from any program.
At this time, we have tracked this to a problem specifically with these printer models in our environment, and we are working with HP to resolve the problem. We have been unable to identify a specific update or change which caused this to occur; at this time, it does not appear to be a virus or other threat.
As of Monday evening, we have approximately 1-2 dozen problem reports from around campus, mostly in administrative offices, all from individuals using Windows. The earliest reports are from Thursday morning, with additional cases appearing on Friday and today. Not everyone in any given office is necessarily affected. Some individuals have had temporary fixes using a variety of methods including an Office repair, an Adobe Acrobat upgrade, or Windows updates, but for many the problem has eventually recurred.
Workarounds for affected computers:
- If you have a Ricoh or other non-HP printer available to you, set this printer to be your default printer, and print to this printer. The problem will occur when the default printer is the HP or when you attempt to print to the HP printer.
- If you have a local (directly connected) printer, remove your computer from the network to print to the local printer.
If you are having this problem or similar symptoms, please report it to the Help Desk as soon as possible. Please let us know which College computers are having the problem, and when it began. We will also want a list of printers you have installed and which is your default. This will assist us in trending and resolving the problem, and we will also be able to alert you about developments and a solution when one is identified.
Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this.
