Wireless Service in Residence Halls — March 21st

What’s Happening?
On March 21st, 2012, the BrynMawrGuest wireless network will be unavailable in residence halls. The shutdown will begin at 6AM on the 21st, and continue until 6AM on March 22nd.

Machines that are connected to BrynMawrCollege wireless will be unaffected.

Why is this Happening?
BrynMawrGuest is an open, unencrypted network intended for only the most casual use. Using BrynMawrGuest risks passwords, email correspondence, and other personal information which is sent across the network by insecure means.  While many Websites provide some security independent of your network connection, many others do not. To better protect your information, use BrynMawrCollege, our secure, encrypted wireless network. While there are a few devices that do not support the security mechanisms used on BrynMawrCollege, most laptops, smartphones and tablets can and should use BrynMawrCollege.

What should I do?
Before March 21:

  • Connect your devices to BrynMawrCollege now (or any time before the 21st), and you will experience no interruption. If you are currently using BrynMawrGuest, go to https://netreg.brynmawr.edu/cloudpath to join the secure network. You can also find instructions on how to join BrynMawrCollege here.
  • If you are having trouble connecting, can’t tell which network you are using, or are unsure if your device can connect, stop by the Help Desk on the first floor of Canaday for assistance. Bring the device or devices that you have questions about.

On March 21

  • If you have not connected to BrynMawrCollege before this date, you will be unable to connect in your residence hall.  Bring your computer or mobile device to Canaday or any academic building to get connected to Bryn Mawr College using the instructions above.
  • If you have a mobile device that is incapable of joining BrynMawrCollege (such as a Kindle or a Nook), you can bring it to any academic building to download materials.
  • Certain gaming systems may also be incapable of joining the secure network; they will not have connectivity during this period.
