BIONIC Times Out after 30 Minutes: Warning messages & keeping your session active

Posted June 3rd, 2014 at 4:07 pm.

As you may have experienced, community members’ BIONIC sessions now time out after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Since this change went into effect on May 10th, we’ve come up with a couple of tricks you can use to prevent your session from timing out unexpectedly:

  • A warning message will pop up at the 25 minute mark.  Click ‘ok’ to restart the 30 minute clock, which will keep your session active for another 30 minutes.  Be sure to set your browser to allow pop-ups from vbm.brynmawr.edu in order to see this warning message.
  • Your session will stay active as long as you are navigating through BIONIC using your browser.  To remain active you can click a button, navigate to a new page, or use a drop-down menu.  If you are not actively using BIONIC, your session will time out and you will need to log in again.

This change was originally announced on the IS Blog on May 1st and May 8th, and was emailed to all faculty and staff on those dates as well.  The 30-minute timeout policy is supported by the College’s auditors, and is a security best practice to protect vulnerable, proprietary data (including protections required by law).  Finally, having fewer unused active sessions means that the web server’s resources are providing better performance to those actively using BIONIC.
